JACKSON — Township officials are moving ahead with plans aimed at easing congestion along one of the township’s most heavily traveled roads.
The Township Council voted Tuesday night to formally support a package of traffic improvements for South Cooks Bridge Road, a corridor long known by residents for backups and delays.
The project, being developed with Ocean County, would focus on the stretch between Brewers Bridge Road and Hope Chapel Road. Officials said the goal is to improve traffic flow and make the area safer for drivers, school traffic, emergency responders and local residents.
The proposed work calls for one travel lane in each direction, along with a dedicated center turning lane. Other planned improvements include a new left-turn lane for eastbound traffic onto New Central Avenue, a dedicated right-turn lane for westbound traffic onto Brewers Bridge Road, and an extended left-turn lane at Hope Chapel Road to help reduce backups at the intersection.
Council President Mordy Burnstein credited Mayor Jennifer Kuhn and county officials for working together over the past five months to develop a plan for the roadway.
“We know how important safe and efficient roadways are to our residents, and we’re excited to continue working with our county partners to move these improvements forward,” Burnstein said.
Officials said updates will be provided as the project advances through future stages.
