TOMS RIVER — Just as all of the snow from the January storm finally melted, there is now a bullseye on the Garden State, especially the Jersey Shore!
A powerful winter storm is set to hammer the region including Ocean and Monmouth Counties, where forecasters warn of blizzard conditions, up to 20 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 55 mph.
The National Weather Service placed Monmouth, Ocean and southeastern Burlington counties under a blizzard warning from 10 a.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday.
Heavy snow is expected to fall at rates of up to 2 inches per hour at times, creating dangerous whiteout conditions and significant drifting. Travel is advised for emergencies only.
Snow is forecast to intensify Sunday evening and continue overnight before tapering off Monday afternoon. Early precipitation could mix with rain, but colder air is expected to change conditions to all snow.
Other parts of New Jersey are under winter storm warnings with lower snowfall totals, but coastal communities are expected to see the most severe impacts.
Officials say they will continue monitoring the system as it develops.
