LAKEWOOD — A Toms River man was arrested after police said a road rage dispute escalated into a crash and violent confrontation Friday afternoon.
Lakewood police responded to the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Chestnut Street at about 3:30 p.m. Aug. 14 following reports of a two-vehicle crash and an assault.
Investigators said the drivers had been involved in a road rage encounter before their vehicles collided.
After the crash, one driver allegedly confronted the other, forced the victim’s face against the side of a vehicle and struck him until he lost consciousness, police said.
The victim suffered a minor cut and was taken to a local hospital. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Police arrested Thomas Vance, 39, of Toms River, and charged him with aggravated assault. He was taken to the Ocean County Jail pending further court proceedings.
“Road rage incidents can escalate very quickly and have serious consequences,” Police Chief Gregory H. Meyer said. “We ask motorists to remain calm, avoid engaging with aggressive drivers, and contact law enforcement if they feel threatened or unsafe. No disagreement on the roadway is worth someone getting hurt or ending up in jail.”
The Lakewood Police Department continues to investigate the incident.
The charge is an accusation. Vance is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
