JACKSON – Two illegal immigrants charged in a grocery store parking lot crash that killed a 9-month-old boy will remain jailed pending trial, authorities said.
Superior Court Judge Kimarie Rahill ordered Maria CobonGuzman, 20, and Ariadna Lazaro-Flores, 22, detained at the Ocean County Jail.
CobonGuzman faces manslaughter, two counts of assault by auto and a charge of driving without ever having a valid license. Lazaro-Flores is charged with creating a substantial risk of death.
Authorities said Lazaro-Flores was teaching CobonGuzman to drive outside the NPGS grocery store on West County Line Road. CobonGuzman allegedly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, striking a mother carrying her infant son and pushing her 5-year-old daughter in a stroller.
The three victims were taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where the infant, identified in court records as Yitzchok Rosenberg, died.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged detainers against both women. CobonGuzman, a Guatemalan national, has a removal order. Lazaro-Flores, a Mexican national, will enter removal proceedings after the Ocean County case concludes.
The charges are accusations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
