TOMS RIVER — Joseph “Joe” Meyers Jr., a longtime Ocean County employee who oversaw the county’s buildings and grounds operations, died Sept. 5. He was 63.
Meyers spent 44 years working for Ocean County, dedicating most of his adult life to public service. During his career, he rose to lead the Buildings and Grounds Department, overseeing the maintenance and operation of facilities across the county.
County officials remembered Meyers as a dependable leader whose strong work ethic, extensive knowledge and concern for his colleagues earned widespread respect.
“His loss will be deeply felt throughout Ocean County Government, especially by the Buildings and Grounds employees who worked alongside him each day,” county officials said in announcing his death on social media.
The Ocean County Board of Commissioners and county employees offered condolences to Meyers’ relatives, friends and coworkers along with the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department.
According to his obituary, he was born Aug. 16, 1963, in Queens, New York, Meyers was the son of the late Joseph J. Meyers Sr. and Beverly Meyers. He was a longtime Toms River resident and graduated from Toms River High School North in 1981.
Away from work, Meyers enjoyed golfing, visiting the Caribbean and cheering for the Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees. He also valued quiet moments at home and time spent with those closest to him.
Meyers is survived by his children, Samantha Meyers and her partner, Tito, and Joseph Meyers and his partner, Kobe; his life partner, Jennifer Maier; Maier’s parents, Raymond and Eileen Maier; and the mother of his children, Elizabeth Meyers.
He is also survived by three sisters and their husbands, Carol and Jim Lane, Corrine and Allen Butler, and Mary and John Kozak; six nieces and nephews, Morgan, John, Erica, Matthew, Kyle and Riley; and many extended relatives, friends and colleagues.
Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Road, Toms River.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at St. Joseph’s Church in Toms River. Cremation will be private.
The family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org in place of flowers.
