WHITING — The Whiting Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 is marking 89 years of service, reflecting on a legacy that began on April 27, 1937, with a single fire truck and a small group of dedicated residents.
Since its founding, the department has evolved into a modern, all-hazards emergency response organization, built over decades through training, commitment and community support. Officials said the company’s growth has been shaped by generations of volunteers who have upheld a tradition of discipline and readiness.
Today, some active members trace their family ties directly back to the department’s earliest days, continuing a legacy of service nearly nine decades later.
Leaders emphasized that the organization remains focused on maintaining high standards, noting that professionalism and preparedness are core expectations rather than exceptions. The department continues to prioritize development and operational excellence as it looks toward the future.
Fire officials also expressed gratitude to Whiting residents for their longstanding support, saying the department’s ability to serve at a high level depends on the trust and backing of the community.
As the company honors its past, it reaffirmed its commitment to remaining a model volunteer fire department in the years ahead.
