MANAHAWKIN – A new, modern Ocean County Library branch will welcome visitors in Stafford Township beginning October 5.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 10 a.m., followed by the public opening at 11 a.m. The 19,700-square-foot facility is located at 179 South Main Street and replaces the former branch on North Main Street.
The building was designed to accommodate the growing population of southern Ocean County while offering expanded collections, technology and gathering areas.
The Ocean County Library secured $4.824 million for the project through the New Jersey Library Construction Bond Act. During the program’s second round, $37 million was awarded to 36 library projects across 13 New Jersey counties.
Among the branch’s new features are public computers, updated technology and shelving that can hold 40% to 50% more books and other materials. The building also includes a larger children’s section, a dedicated teen area, study rooms and community spaces.
Visitors will also find a makerspace for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics activities. A sensory room will offer a more comfortable setting for people with sensory processing needs, while an intergenerational area will provide older adults with opportunities to gather and socialize.
Ocean County Library Director Susan Quinn said the staff is eager to introduce the community to the branch’s expanded programs, collections, equipment and public spaces.
Library Commission Chairman Henry J. Mancini said the long-awaited project was made possible through cooperation and financial support at the state, county and municipal levels.
Ocean County Commissioner Deputy Director Jennifier Bacchione, the governing body’s liaison to the library system, said the new location’s proximity to other county services will make important resources more accessible to residents and visitors.
The Ocean County Library operates 21 branches throughout the county.
Once open, the Stafford Branch will operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.
The construction project was supported by the New Jersey Library Construction Bond Act and administered by the New Jersey State Library.
