MANAHAWKIN — A Stafford family escaped injury after a garage fire damaged their Breakers Drive home, and neighbors are now raising money to help them recover.

The fire broke out June 24 at a single-family home at 1549 Breakers Drive. Officials said lithium-ion batteries stored in the garage may have sparked the blaze, which was later ruled accidental.

Firefighters from Stafford Township, assisted by the Waretown Fire Department, put out the garage fire. Nearby homes were temporarily evacuated as a precaution, and traffic on Breakers Drive was detoured for about two hours while crews worked at the scene.

Stafford Township Police Detective Halliday and Fire Official Heidi Michel reviewed the fire and determined it was accidental. Because of the damaged batteries, the Ocean County Hazardous Materials Unit was called to collect and dispose of them safely.

The family declined assistance from the American Red Cross and On-Point and told officials they would stay with relatives in Beach Haven while making arrangements.

Soon after the fire, family friend Sabrina Vazquez started a fundraiser for the Stephens family to help cover immediate needs as they deal with the damage and displacement.

Vazquez said the family, along with their pets — a dog, cat and rabbit named Marshy — made it out safely. Gift cards are being requested to help the family buy clothing, bedding, toiletries, meals, pet supplies and other essentials.

Vazquez added that the outpouring of support after the fire was “nothing short of incredible” and encouraged residents to continue helping the family as they recover.
