LAKEWOOD — The 19-year-old woman struck by a school bus while riding a scooter in Lakewood has died, authorities confirmed.
The family of Angeles “Angie” Nieto-Gonzalez confirmed online that she passed away on December 5 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, several days after the November 30 crash on West County Line Road near Hope Chapel Road.
First responders performed CPR at the scene before she was transported to the hospital, police said.
Nieto-Gonzalez had been riding a scooter against the flow of traffic when she was struck by the bus. Authorities said she was not wearing a helmet and suffered severe head injuries. Police said the school bus driver has been cleared of all charges.
In the wake of her death, Nieto-Gonzalez’s mother launched a GoFundMe campaign that had raised more than $7,000 as of press time.
Teresa Gonzalez described her daughter as “deeply family-oriented… full of life, dreams, and an energy that lit up everyone around her.”
“Angie was my oldest daughter… my first love, my greatest pride,” she wrote. “I loved her with all my heart, and I will miss her in a way I cannot put into words. I don’t know what life will be like from now on without her, but I do know her absence will be felt forever.”
A post on a Jackson Facebook page said Nieto-Gonzalez recently graduated from Jackson Liberty High School.
