STAFFORD — Local and state authorities are continuing an extensive search across Barnegat Bay nearly a week after a man reportedly jumped from the Route 72 Causeway Bridge, police said.
A witness told officers on the night of November 25th that someone had leapt from the Dorland J. Henderson Memorial Bridge, which spans Manahawkin Bay and links Stafford Township to Long Beach Island.
Responding officers found an unoccupied gray Toyota Camry parked at the top of the span. The vehicle is registered to a 19-year-old Monmouth County resident.
Stafford Police Captain Russell Griffin tells Jersey Shore Online that the New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau has been searching the surrounding waters by boat, supported by aircraft and additional agencies. Griffin noted that strong winds and fast-moving currents could have carried the missing man a significant distance but emphasized that the search remains active.
“The teen’s family has been notified, and he is now classified as a missing person,” Griffin said.
His identity has not been released.
Captain Griffin also said “the Stafford Township Police Department has had our drone unit out there several times, and will continue to do checks of the area.”
Investigators say there is no indication the incident is criminal, but the investigation remains active.
Exit 74 Scanner News was the first to report the incident.
The U.S. Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police, and emergency crews from Stafford, Ship Bottom and Barnegat continue to assist in the ongoing operation.
Authorities noted the emotional challenges many people face during the holiday season and encouraged anyone struggling to seek help.
