FORKED RIVER – No, there’s nothing wrong with your ears and no, it’s not an acutal emergency. However, Ocean County officials want you to be aware of that sound – the Oyster Creek Nuclear Plant siren.
Exelon Generation, owners of the plant, will conduct one of their two semi-annual tests on Tuesday, December 5th at noon.
The sirens will sound for approximately three minutes at full volume as they do every June and December.
The Oyster Creek emergency warning siren system consists of 42 units located within a 10-mile radius of the nation’s oldest nuclear plant.
The sirens are not a signal to evacuate, but a warning to tune to a local Emergency Alert Broadcast television or radio station. County emergency management authorities activate the sirens.
Oyster Creek is scheduled for shut down in 2019.
