Coast Guard Suspends Search After Plane Crash

  CAPE MAY – The US Coast Guard has suspended the search for a missing pilot following Wednesday’s plane crash in the water near Cape May Point.

  On May 29, just before noon, a Mooney M20J single-engine plane crashed into the water near the Cape May lighthouse.

  “Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay watchstanders were notified of the incident shortly after the plane crashed and dispatched two boat crews from Station Cape May, a helicopter crew from Air Station Atlantic City and the Coast Guard Cutter Hammerhead,” stated a release from the US Coast Guard.

  According to an ABC6 News report, the plane departed from the Trenton-Robbinsville Airport in Robbinsville at approximately 8 a.m. The report stated that there was one person on board the plane when it crashed.

  “Boats and aircraft saturated the surface as divers from the fire department and state police searched below the surface,” stated the release.

  Also aiding in the search were New Jersey State Police, Cape May Fire Department, Cape May Police, Beach Patrol and Sea Tow.

  As of Thursday morning, US Coast Guard officials have suspended the search.

  An investigation into the incident is being conducted by The Federal Aviation Administration and New Jersey State Police
