TRENTON — As boating activity peaks across New Jersey’s waterways, the New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau is reminding everyone on the water that safe boating begins with personal responsibility.
State Police are urging boaters to never operate a vessel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Officials said boating under the influence impairs judgment, slows reaction time, and significantly increases the risk of serious crashes. Boaters are encouraged to designate a sober operator before leaving the dock.
The agency also emphasized the importance of obeying speed limits and operating responsibly. Excessive speed and large wakes can damage docks and other property, capsize smaller boats, and cause injuries. Operators should slow down in congested or narrow waterways and remain aware of the wake their vessel creates.
With many boaters staying out after sunset, troopers are also reminding operators to exercise extra caution at night. Reduced visibility makes it more difficult to judge distances and spot hazards. Officials recommend maintaining a safe speed, using proper navigation lights, and staying alert for other vessels, floating debris, and changing conditions.
The Marine Services Bureau also stressed that wearing a properly fitted life jacket is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stay safe. According to the agency, many boating fatalities involve people who were not wearing a personal flotation device.
Finally, State Police are encouraging boaters to avoid distractions while operating a vessel. Keeping eyes on the water, scanning for hazards, limiting cellphone use, and having a dedicated lookout can help prevent accidents.
Officials said safe boating starts with every operator making responsible decisions before and during their time on the water.
