TRENTON – A worker for the Belford Post Office allegedly stole prescriptions being sent by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

There were several times that veterans reported that their medications were not getting to them. Police investigated, sending inert pills through the mail. They wound up in the possession of Christopher F. Donohue, 60, of Leonardo, police said.

The charge of theft of mail by postal employee carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine. These are merely charges until proven in a court of law.

U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito credited special agents of the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, Eastern Area Field Office, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew M. Modafferi; the Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Inspector General, Northeast Field Office, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Christopher F. Algieri; and the Middletown Township Police Department under the direction of Chief Craig Weber with the investigation.
