MANCHESTER – A Toms River woman was killed Thursday evening when her car crossed the center line on Route 70 and collided head-on with a pickup truck, police said.
Manchester Township police responded around 5:14 p.m. July 30 to the crash near mile marker 43.
Investigators said a 2019 Honda Civic was traveling east when it entered the westbound lane and struck a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD. Both vehicles came to rest in the westbound lanes with extensive front-end damage.
The Honda’s driver, 53-year-old Tammy Huth of Toms River, was wearing a seat belt and was the vehicle’s only occupant. Police said the car’s front and side airbags deployed, but Huth was unresponsive when emergency crews arrived. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The pickup truck driver, 32-year-old Colin Michaelis of Lindenwold, was also alone and wearing a seat belt. He suffered minor injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.
Route 70 was closed while authorities investigated the crash and cleared the roadway.
Manchester emergency medical personnel and firefighters were joined at the scene by the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office, Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, New Jersey Department of Transportation, New Jersey State Police, Priced Rite Towing and Oliverie Funeral Home.
The crash remains under investigation by Patrolman Sage Sysol of the Manchester Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section. Police said failure to maintain a lane appears to have been a major contributing factor.
