WHITING – A local store had to be shut down after a car that crashed into it compromised the integrity of the building.

Manchester Township Police said that John R. Dzitko II, 71, of Whiting, crashed his 2012 Lexus into the Dollar General at 109 Lacey Road around 1 p.m. Thursday. The township’s building inspector had the building closed due to the damage sustained.

A cashier inside sustained a neck injury while trying to avoid falling shelving that had been forced from the wall. That employee was taken to Community Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Dzitko’s vehicle was stopped in “drive” in a handicapped parking space, waiting for a friend who was inside the store, when his Lexus accelerated into the building. He was unharmed.

Images from the accident scene were not immediately available.

Members of the Whiting First Aid, and the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department assisted.

This crash is being investigated by Patrolman Stephen Hankins of the Manchester Township Police Department Patrol Bureau.
