Car And Bike Crash Leaves Two Dead, Victims ID’d

BERKELEY – A serious accident involving a car and a bicyclist has left two people dead. The afternoon crash also caused a major road closure for several hours.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer confirmed that officers from the Berkeley Township Police Department were sent to the scene around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 9.

The department was notified of a bicyclist being struck by a motor vehicle on Route 9 just south of Sylvan Lakes Boulevard.

A probe by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit and the Berkeley Township Police revealed that 41-year-old Jeffrey Martin of Bayville was traveling southbound on Route 9 when his vehicle crossed the centerline of traffic and struck 31-year-old Frank Brooks of Beachwood, who was riding a bicycle on the shoulder of the northbound lane. 

Both Martin and Brooks were pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Ocean County Vehicular Homicide Unit, Berkeley Township Police Department, Toms River Police Department and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
