LAKEWOOD — A Toms River man was arrested on drug distribution and drunken driving charges after a traffic stop in Lakewood, police said.

Members of the Lakewood Police Department Patrol Division stopped a vehicle June 6 after observing a traffic violation, according to police.

During the investigation, officers determined that the driver, Robert Gadson, 61, of Toms River, was impaired and placed him under arrest, police said.

A search tied to the investigation led officers to seize marijuana, cash and items commonly associated with drug distribution, authorities said.

Gadson was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also received several motor vehicle summonses, including driving while intoxicated and refusal to submit breath samples, police said.

He was processed at Lakewood Police Headquarters and taken to the Ocean County Jail pending court proceedings.

Lakewood Police Chief Gregory Meyer said the arrest showed the importance of traffic enforcement and proactive patrols.

“This arrest highlights the importance of proactive patrol and traffic enforcement,” Meyer said. “By remaining vigilant, our officers were able to remove an impaired driver from our roadways while also disrupting suspected illegal drug activity. We remain committed to keeping our community safe.”

The charges are accusations, and Gadson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
