LAKEWOOD – After years of planning and coordination, residents living along and near New Central Avenue are seeing the results of a major sidewalk improvement project aimed at making one of Lakewood’s busiest corridors safer for pedestrians.
Township officials said more than 3,000 linear feet of new sidewalk were installed during the final months of 2025, creating a continuous pedestrian route from Gudz Road to the Lakewood-Jackson boundary. Additional sidewalk segments were also completed along portions of New Egypt and New Central avenues.
The project was overseen by the Lakewood Township Committee, working with township engineers, county officials, contractors and nearby property owners to navigate the challenges of construction along an active roadway.
According to township officials, conditions varied significantly from block to block, requiring customized solutions. Some sections were built using traditional concrete designed to withstand heavier loads near residential driveways, while other areas utilized porous concrete to improve drainage and reduce the risk of standing water and ice.
Township Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein praised the collaboration behind the effort, calling the project an important investment in public safety.
“This is another example of our team working together to deliver a critical infrastructure improvement,” Lichtenstein said in a statement. “Enhancing pedestrian safety not only improves quality of life for residents, but can also help ease vehicle congestion along these busy roads.”
Officials said the completed sidewalks are expected to provide safer access for pedestrians while supporting long-term transportation and safety goals throughout the township.
