TOMS RIVER – A township woman had to be pulled to safety after she hit the wrong pedal and ended up trapped in the front seat while her vehicle stood on its side.

Toms River Township Police told Jersey Shore Online that 82-year-old Elizabeth Stein was attempting to pull into a parking spot in front of the Route 70 Rite Aid store on Wednesday, November 20, when she thought she was hitting the brake. She hit the accelerator instead and lost control of her vehicle.

Department Spokesperson Jillian Messina said she then drove over a row of low hedges, traveled in a right-handed arc over a grassy area, went over some more shrubbery and then collided with two parked vehicles.

Stein’s vehicle overturned on the drivers side, trapping her inside. Police, fire, EMS and other rescue crews arrived at the scene.

Messina said Stein was freed by the Pleasant Plains Fire Company and taken to Ocean Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

The accident is being investigated by Traffic Safety Officer Terry Warren.

Stein was also hit with a Careless Driving summons.
