TOMS RIVER – Students at Toms River Intermediate East put their crochet skills to work for a cause, creating handmade blankets for patients undergoing chemotherapy at Community Medical Center.
The effort was inspired by teacher Christina Gould, who encouraged students to use their talents to bring comfort to others. The project combined creativity, community service and a little extra motivation from a dog-turned-T-shirt mascot that became part of the group’s identity.
With support from the team at Community Medical Center, the students completed blankets that will be given to patients receiving treatment. The handmade items are meant to offer warmth and encouragement during a difficult time.
District officials praised the students for showing compassion and using their skills to make a difference for local patients.
