Serious Crash Knocks Out Power In Toms River

TOMS RIVER – Township police are investigating a serious motor vehicle crash that knocked down a utility pole leading to power problems for many local residents.

At 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department sent out an alert via text and email that all drivers should avoid the area of Bay Avenue between Cedar Grove Rd and Vaughn Avenue due to a serious accident and that the roadway would be closed until further notice.

Ocean County Scanner News reported that the accident involving a truck was due to an intoxicated driver who knocked down the utility pole, leading to a blown transformer and downed wires. Scanner News reported widespread outages in the East Dover section of town.

According to JCP&L’s outage map, an estimated 500-1,500 are without power in the area. Crews are on the scene trying to restore the electricity.
