TOMS RIVER – A 61-year-old township resident remains in critical condition at a shore area trauma center after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street, police said.

Toms River Police Department Spokesperson Jillian Messina said Carl Cereghini was attempting to cross at the intersection of Vaughn and Windsor Avenue when he was hit by a vehicle traveling north on Vaughn.

The unidentified driver, who wasn’t harmed in the incident and wasn’t impaired at the time of the accident, told police that Cereghini entered the lane of travel in front of the vehicle leaving no time to stop or the ability to avoid hitting him.

Officers were called to the scene a few minutes before 5 p.m. on November 29 where they found Cereghini with severe injuries. He was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune and is listed in critical condition.

The accident remains under investigation by Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Ryan Fitzgerald.
