TOMS RIVER – A Lakewood man is in critical condition after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Route 70 last night, police said.

On June 16 at approximately 11:58 p.m., police responded to the area of Route 70 near Massachusetts Ave. for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

The pedestrian, 54-year old John Daniels was attempting to cross the roadway to contact the driver of the AAA truck he has requested for his disabled motorcycle when the incident occurred. Daniels was struck by a 2007 Dodge Caliber driven by 49-year old Marc Trzaska of Lakehurst.

An investigation ruled out impairment or cell phone use by the driver, according to police.

Daniels was airlifted to Jersey Shore Medical Center where he is listed in critical, but stable, condition.

  The investigation is ongoing.
