TOMS RIVER – Officers said a Toms River woman driving under the influence was driving recklessly and caused a multi-vehicle accident, which included a school bus and police car.

In the morning hours on March 1, the Toms River Police Department responded to a call regarding a multi-vehicle crash on Whitesville Road, near the intersection of Leawood Ave.

According to police, the suspect Heather Scoville, 36 of Toms River, had been traveling east on Whitesville Road in the left lane when she negotiated a curve in the roadway. Scoville failed to keep right and proceeded to enter the westbound traffic lane where she sideswiped an oncoming vehicle.

Scoville continued moving east in the westbound lane and as a result hit a marked New Jersey State Police SUV. This caused the Trooper’s vehicle to spin and hit an oncoming Toms River School bus, a street sign and a utility pole, causing severe damage.

Police stated that no students were on the bus at the time of the accident. One victim from the crash was transported to the hospital for minor injuries.

Subsequently, Scoville was cited with Driving Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol, Reckless Driving, and Failure to Maintain a Lane.

At this time, the accident is under investigation by Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Robert Westfall and Traffic Safety Officer Mark Nater.
