BARNEGAT – A 67-year-old township man has been charged with murder after authorities accused him of killing his wife inside their Windward Drive home.
Barnegat Township police responded to the residence at approximately 6:30 p.m. September 7 following a report of domestic violence, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.
Officers entered the home and found William Garvin seated in a chair with a knife protruding from his chest, authorities said. His wife, 69-year-old Eileen Garvin, was discovered dead on the floor.
William Garvin was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where he was listed in stable condition.
Investigators determined that William Garvin was responsible for his wife’s death and that his chest wound was self-inflicted, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Garvin was charged September 8 and served with a complaint warrant at the hospital. Authorities said he will be taken to the Ocean County Jail following his release from medical care and held pending a detention hearing.
The investigation involved the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Barnegat Township Police Department, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit and Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The charge is an accusation, and Garvin is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
