TOMS RIVER – A construction worker was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver early Thursday, authorities said.

Toms River Police responded at 1 a.m. to Lakewood Road and Raymond Avenue, where they found the man, who was working for a roadway construction company, with serious injuries in the roadway, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. He was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been publicly released although authorities said he was 50.

Authorities said 51-year-old Douglas Smith showed signs of impairment and was charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.

Smith was also taken to Community Medical Center, where a blood sample was obtained under a court-authorized warrant. Prosecutors said additional charges may be forthcoming.
