STAFFORD — Police officers responding to a residential fire on Yeoman Road in Manahawkin on February 13, rescued a man who attempted to escape the blaze by jumping from a second-story balcony, township officials said.

Police posted bodycam video on their Facebook page. Sgt. Woodring, Senior Municipal Police Officer Brown, Patrolman Otte and Patrolman O’Rourke arrived at the scene and encountered the individual as flames consumed part of the structure. As the situation intensified, the man moved to an exterior balcony and prepared to jump.

According to authorities, the officers quickly positioned themselves below and, working together, were able to safely catch the man as he leapt, preventing what could have been serious injuries or a fatal outcome.

Body-worn camera footage released by the department captures the urgency of the rapidly unfolding emergency and the coordinated response by the officers.

“This incident is a powerful example of the dedication and courage of our officers,” Police Chief James Haldenwang said in a statement. “What these officers did was truly amazing. Their quick, selfless actions undoubtedly saved this man’s life, and I am awestruck by the heroics displayed.”

Officials said the fire ultimately resulted in a loss of life.

Betty Matero, 92, was unable to exit the residence and died at the scene.

Authorities extended condolences to the families and loved ones affected by the tragedy.

Police also thanked assisting law enforcement agencies, local fire departments, emergency medical services personnel and partner agencies for their coordinated efforts during the response.

Investigators concluded the blaze was accidental and likely caused by a malfunction involving lithium-ion batteries.
