LACEY – A construction accident at a nuclear power plant caused the power to be knocked out in several towns, police said.

On June 21, a contractor doing work at the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant struck a pole with a piece of construction equipment, JCP&L spokesperson Chris Hoenig said.

Subsequently, parts of Berkeley Township, Lacey Township, Barnegat Township and Waretown lost power. Hoenig explained how neither the Oyster Creek plant nor the equipment is JCP&L owned nor contracted; the plant currently being operated by Holtec.

Around 31,000 households and businesses had no electricity, Jersey Central Power and Light reported.

Hoenig said that over 23,000 customers were restored by 3 p.m. on Monday. The remaining customers (about 7,800) were restored in stages, with the outage only affecting six customers by 6 p.m. as final repairs were made.
