Ocean County Man Charged After Police Find Meth, Other Drugs

STAFFORD — A Manahawkin man was arrested after a narcotics investigation led police to methamphetamine, prescription drugs and drug packaging materials, authorities said.

Richard J. Wolverton, 67, was arrested at about 9:30 p.m. June 11 after the Stafford Township Drug Enforcement Unit completed an investigation, police said.

The investigation led detectives to obtain a search warrant for a home at 40 Fairview Terrace in Manahawkin. During the search, police said Wolverton was found with methamphetamine, packaging materials for controlled dangerous substances and prescription legend drugs.

Detectives also suspected that drugs were inside Wolverton’s vehicle, which was parked in the driveway. Detective Zach Wiatrowski and his narcotics K-9 partner, Venus, conducted an exterior sniff of the vehicle, and the dog indicated the presence of narcotics odor, police said. The vehicle was then seized while detectives sought a court-approved search warrant.

Wolverton was charged with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of school property, possession of methamphetamine, possession of five or more doses of a prescription legend drug, and possession of four or fewer doses of a prescription legend drug.

He was processed at Stafford Township Police Department and taken to the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing in Ocean County Superior Court.

On June 12, detectives received a search warrant for Wolverton’s vehicle. Police said a search turned up more methamphetamine, clonazepam, drug paraphernalia and packaging materials.

Wolverton was additionally charged with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of school property, possession of methamphetamine, possession of clonazepam, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to turn over controlled dangerous substances to police.

He remained held at the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing, police said.
