LACEY – Oyster Creek Generating Station recently experienced a leak in a water heater that has forced the plant to operate at reduced capacity, officials stated.

The leak occurred in a tube in a water heater which has since been taken out of service by Exelon Generation. Without the heater in operation, the plant is now producing only 70 percent of its normal power. However, officials noted no concerns of contamination.

According to Neil Sheehan, Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman, the leak has not contaminated the Barnegat Bay nor has it affected any Oyster Creek employees. The reactor operates on a “closed loop,” he said.

Officials confirmed that residents will see no difference in their electricity supply as a result of this leak.
