LONG BEACH ISLAND – Firefighters from Barnegat Light and neighboring agencies quickly knocked down a late-night garage fire that threatened a residence, preventing major damage, officials said.

Crews were dispatched on February 6 at about 11:12 p.m. after a report of a structure fire. When firefighters arrived, they found a detached garage behind a home fully engulfed in flames. As the fire began spreading toward the rear exterior of the house, the response was escalated to a second alarm.

Firefighters made an aggressive attack on the blaze and were able to stop the flames from entering the residence. Damage to the home was limited to minor exterior siding, authorities said.

No one was inside the home at the time of the fire. The Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated and determined the fire was accidental.

Police assisted with evacuating nearby residents as a precaution, while the Barnegat Light First Aid Squad provided medical monitoring and rehabilitation for firefighters operating at the scene. Fire police units also helped manage traffic and keep pedestrians at a safe distance.

Despite icy conditions and the late hour, officials credited coordinated efforts among all responding agencies with preventing the incident from becoming more serious.

In a social media post, authorities thanked the following agencies:

High Point Volunteer Fire Company
Wolfschmidt Fire Training, LLC
