FORKED RIVER — Popcorn Park Zoo announced the death of Jess, a longtime resident tiger remembered for her playful personality and warm interactions with staff and visitors.

The zoo said Jess’ health had worsened in recent weeks despite extensive care from animal caretakers and repeated examinations by veterinarians. Staff said they were heartbroken by the loss but grateful that Jess lived a long life, reaching an advanced age for a tiger.

Jess arrived at the zoo from an animal facility in Colorado after the owner’s declining health left her, her brother Eli and more than 100 other animals in need of placement.

At Popcorn Park, Jess became known for her energetic habits, including splashing in her pool, racing after Eli and stretching out in sunny spots. Staff also recalled her running over to greet familiar faces with her trademark chuffing sound.

The zoo said Jess was deeply loved by those who cared for her and by the many visitors who met her over the years.
