BARNEGAT – Barnegat Police are warning residents against scammers that demand payment for fraudulent services.

The department released a scam alert via Nixle on April 3, reminding residents that “a legitimate company will never have you go out and purchase any type of gift cards (Green Dot, Google Play, ITunes, etc.) to pay them for their services.”

A legitimate company will also not ask you to make a payment through a payment transfer company like Western Union, police said.

This alert comes after an influx of scammers reported to Barnegat police. These scammers are requesting access to residents’ computers and demanding money for fraudulent services.

“Please remember that Google, Norton, Microsoft or any other company will never contact you via phone and request payment on a prepaid card,” police said.

If you receive a call like this, contact the Barnegat Police Department and/or report to the FBI at IC3.gov.
