LAVALLETTE – Strong winds caused a major structural collapse at a Sunoco gas station along Route 35 northbound in Lavallette, leaving the station’s canopy severely damaged.

The canopy at Kelly’s Sunoco was blown over by the wind, crashing down onto the station property and destroying much of the overhead structure.

Emergency responders were called to the scene after the collapse was reported.

No injuries were reported.

The damage forced the closure of the station as crews assessed the stability of the remaining structure and began securing the area. The extent of the damage was significant, with twisted metal, debris and signage scattered around.

Officials had not released an estimate of repair costs.

The owner’s took to Facebook and posted this message: So not the evening I had planned tonight, however Kelly family along and all of our friends who have supported us so much for 43 years will fix this and get back to business as soon as possible. I have not had a chance to check all my messages or Facebook posts or phone calls or anything else because there’s been hundreds, but we have the support of our great town of Lavallette, all our customers all our friends and our families. tomorrow morning we clean up and go from there. Thanks to all the amazing first responders for your help and support today. Hopefully we will reopen by Monday. We have been through worse and we’ll get this done. Love you all and thank you.

We’re so glad!!
