OCEAN COUNTY – Large sections of central Ocean County were left without electricity, some are still in the dark, after a significant power disruption knocked out service in multiple municipalities.

According to the Jersey Central Power & Light outage map, residents in Berkeley Township, Lacey Township, Waretown and Barnegat reported losing power shortly before 10 a.m. on Christmas Eve, December 24.

Utility officials said more than 24,000 customers were affected.

The outage area spans a wide corridor, beginning in southern Bayville and Pinewald and extending south through Barnegat, the utility’s outage map showed.

Authorities urged motorists to use caution as traffic signals were out at numerous intersections throughout the region. The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that multiple traffic lights were not operating due to the loss of power.

Officials had not yet identified the cause of the outage as crews continued to assess the situation. JCP&L estimated service would be restored by approximately 1 p.m., though restoration times may vary by neighborhood.
