LAKEWOOD – An 18-year-old student sustained a head injury after being hit by a car last night, police said.

Around 10 p.m., the victim was struck after exiting a school bus at the intersection of Madison Avenue and Courtney Road.

According to police, the school bus was traveling south on Madison Avenue prior to the driver activating its flashing red lights. When the bus stopped at the northwest corner of Courtney Road, the student exited the bus and began crossing over towards the northbound lane.

Police said as the victim cleared the bus, he was struck by a 2020 Acura driven by a 24-year-old Howell man who had been traveling south in the passing lane of Madison Avenue.

The student sustained a non-life-threatening head injury and was brought to a local trauma center for treatment and further evaluation.

Authorities later determined that the driver failed to observe the flashing red lights. The driver was given a Field Sobriety Test and police concluded that the man was not impaired. He was issued several motor vehicles summons.
