TOMS RIVER — Ocean County residents were urged to use extreme caution on the roads after a winter storm dropped about 7 inches of snow across the county before transitioning to freezing rain.
The Ocean County Sheriff’s Department said the changeover to freezing rain has created icy and dangerous travel conditions, even in areas where roads may appear wet or mostly clear. Ice buildup has been reported on bridges, overpasses, side streets and other untreated roadways, making driving particularly hazardous.
Authorities warned that even a thin glaze of ice can significantly reduce traction and increase the risk of crashes. Residents were encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel and to slow down and remain alert if travel is unavoidable.
Law enforcement officers remain deployed throughout Ocean County, assisting stranded motorists and responding to motor vehicle accidents as conditions continue to deteriorate.
Residents were advised to monitor official updates for the latest information and to prioritize safety as the storm system moves through the region.
