TRENTON – Two Republican state senators are again urging lawmakers to advance a bill they say would give New Jersey motorists long-term relief from high fuel costs.

Sen. Carmen Amato Jr., R-Ocean, and Sen. Anthony M. Bucco, R-Morris and Passaic, called for passage of S-1559, legislation aimed at reducing costs for drivers at the gas pump.

Amato said families across the state continue to face pressure from rising everyday expenses, including the cost of gasoline.

“Garden State residents deserve meaningful relief that helps them keep more of their hard-earned money,” Amato said.

Bucco said the proposal would help taxpayers while still protecting funding for transportation needs such as roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

Supporters said the bill is part of a broader Republican affordability effort. GOP lawmakers have pointed to more than $1 billion in proposed savings and spending changes they say could be used to offset tax relief for residents.

Republicans criticized Democratic leaders, saying they have focused on increased spending instead of reducing costs for taxpayers.
