TOMS RIVER – A man had to be airlifted to a shore area trauma center after he was struck by a township police officer’s patrol vehicle, authorities said.

Toms River Police Spokesperson Jillian Messina confirmed that 42-year-old William Carberry was attempting to cross the roadway near the intersection of Fischer Blvd and Adams Avenue when the accident occurred around 10 p.m. on May 29.

Carberry was originally transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River, but then flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment of his injuries.

Carberry is listed in stable condition.

According to the Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer, “Initial evidence indicates that Mr. Carberry was wearing dark clothing, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was crossing outside the designated crosswalk at the time he was struck.”

The incident is currently under investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
