Ocean County Man Sentenced For Shooting 4-Year-Old

LAKEWOOD – A man has been sentenced to state prison after shooting a four-year-old Asbury Park girl back in 2020, officials said.

On August 18, 2020, the 4-year-old child was shot while sitting outside her family’s home with other family members on Boston Way, a residential village in Asbury Park. She was shot in the upper thigh area which broke the femur bone. After physicians treated the child, at the time they deemed the injury as serious, but non-life threatening.

Investigation revealed that Sciaire N. Jackson, 28, of Lakewood, began firing a handgun at several people outside of an apartment while riding a bicycle. The child, who was playing outside, was not the intended target of the shooting, police said.

In addition, a second person returned fire at Jackson, however that person has not yet been identified.

On August 11, Monmouth County Acting Prosecutor Lori Linskey announced that Jackson was sentenced to 8 years in a New Jersey State Prison. The sentence is subject to the provisions of NERA, the “No Early Release Act,” requiring Jackson to serve 85 percent of the sentence imposed before becoming eligible for parole.

Jackson had previously pleaded guilty to second degree Aggravated Assault and second degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose on June 21.
