TRENTON – New Jersey State Police announced a mandatory travel restriction beginning Sunday night as a major winter storm is already pounding the region with heavy snowfall and strong winds across the state.

The restriction takes effect at 9 p.m. February 22, and will remain in place until 7 a.m. February 23. Officials said the measure is intended to keep roadways clear for emergency responders and snow removal crews as blizzard conditions are expected.

Gov. Mikie Sherrill declared a State of Emergency on February 21, effective at noon Sunday, to support public safety efforts and expedite storm response operations.

Under the order, non-essential vehicles are barred from operating on state, county and municipal roads during the restriction period. The New Jersey Turnpike is not included in the prohibition. Authorities said violators could face penalties under state law.

The directive does not apply to emergency responders and public safety personnel, snow removal and public works crews, public transportation employees, and government workers conducting official duties. Utility company employees, healthcare workers and individuals seeking urgent medical care are also exempt.

Additional exemptions include staff supporting emergency shelters and human services facilities, deliveries of critical medical supplies, members of the news media and private snow removal contractors.

Patients traveling for urgent medical treatment and those accompanying them are permitted on roadways. Travel necessary to maintain critical infrastructure and essential businesses — including energy providers, fuel suppliers, food retailers, pharmacies and hardware stores — is also allowed, along with personnel supporting airline and airport operations.

Officials said the restrictions are designed to protect residents and allow crews to clear roads and restore essential services as quickly as possible.
