LAKEWOOD – Police, firefighters and emergency medical crews had their hands full Monday night after a commercial building caught fire in the township, according to Ocean County authorities.

Police said the fire started inside the Ocean Avenue building sending smoke and flames into the air. Some as far south as Toms River were able to see and smell it.

Lakewood Police Captain Gregory Staffordsmith confirmed to the media that two people, believed to be squatters, were injured and were taken to a local hospital.

The building, located adjacent to a lumberyard, was believed to have been vacant otherwise and is currently for sale.

Police urge everyone to avoid Ocean Avenue and South Park Avenue as crews are still on the scene.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
