Pedestrian Struck, Killed While Crossing Route 9

  BERKELEY – A man was struck and killed while attempting to cross Route 9 in Berkeley Township on January 6, police said.

  Around 6:44 p.m., officers responded to the area of 242 Route 9 (Riverside Plaza) for a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle.

  According to police, the victim appeared to have walked from the Bayville Elks and attempted to cross Route 9 to where his car was parked at the Riverside Plaza.

  While crossing the roadway, the victim was hit by a blue 2011 Chevy Cruze in the southbound lane, police said. RWJ Paramedics witnessed the incident while in traffic and were able to immediately begin treating the victim.

  Paramedics, Berkeley Twp. First Aid, and Berkeley Township Police officers attempted life saving measures until the victim was transported to Community Medical Center where he was ultimately pronounced deceased.

  The New Jersey Department of Transportation was notified and they closed the southbound travel lane of Route 9 during the investigation.
