LAKEWOOD — Fifteen years after the fatal shooting of Lakewood Police Officer Chris Matlosz, township officials and residents paused to remember a young patrolman whose death continues to resonate throughout the community.
Matlosz, 27, was shot and killed Jan. 14, 2011, while questioning a man authorities later described as a dangerous criminal. The killing shocked the township and drew statewide attention to the risks faced by law enforcement officers during routine patrols.
Township Committeeman and emergency services liaison Meir Lichtenstein said Matlosz is remembered not only for his courage in uniform, but for his character away from the job.

“I will always remember Chris as a dedicated, brave public servant, and an especially compassionate human being on a personal level,” Lichtenstein said. He added that the anniversary also serves as a moment to honor other Lakewood officers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to serve.
In the months following Matlosz’s death, the Township Committee voted to rename a stretch of Third Street, between Clifton and Lexington avenues, as “Matlosz Way.” The roadway, adjacent to Town Hall, stands as a permanent memorial to the fallen officer.
More than a decade later, township officials say Matlosz’s legacy remains woven into the fabric of Lakewood, symbolizing both sacrifice and service within the community.
