LAKEWOOD – A Freehold man is facing theft and drug charges after police said he was tied to the theft of a cell phone at a local business.
Nicholas Shapiro, 33, was charged following an investigation by the Lakewood Police Department into a cell phone theft reported earlier this month.
Detectives identified Shapiro as the suspect and filed theft charges, police said. On May 29, Shapiro was arrested on an outstanding warrant with help from the Tinton Falls Police Department.
Authorities said additional charges were filed after corrections officers at the Ocean County Jail found a quantity of suspected cocaine in Shapiro’s possession during the intake process.
“This arrest is the result of excellent police work and strong cooperation between our law enforcement partners,” Lakewood Police Chief Gregory H. Meyer said. “We remain committed to investigating crimes thoroughly and holding offenders accountable.”
Police thanked the Tinton Falls Police Department and Ocean County Jail staff for their assistance.
Charges are merely accusations, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
