FREEHOLD – An 18-year-old man has been charged in connection with a pair of shooting incidents that occurred in Asbury Park in September, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago.

Calvin Joseph is charged with first-degree attempted murder, along with second-degree counts of unlawful possession of a handgun and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Police were called to the 100 block of Monmouth Avenue on September 11 for a report of gunfire. Officers found two men wounded. One victim, identified as 37-year-old Tyshan Small, was taken to a hospital and later died. The second man was treated for a non-life-threatening injury and released.

Investigators from the Prosecutor’s Office and the Asbury Park Police Department determined that a second round of gunfire erupted at the same location moments after the initial shooting. No one was injured in that incident. Joseph was later identified as the individual responsible and was taken into custody on September 12 on an unrelated matter. He remains detained.

Authorities say the investigation into the deadly shooting determined that 32-year-old Jerod Jones of Neptune City was responsible for the attack that killed Small and injured the second man. Jones remains at large.

Anyone with information on Jones’ whereabouts is asked to contact Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Aaron Shaw at 800-533-7443 or Asbury Park Police Detective Anthony Troublefield at 732-774-1300.

The case is being handled by Assistant Prosecutor Caitlin J. Sidley. Information about Joseph’s legal representation was not immediately available.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
