OCEAN TOWNSHIP – Police charged a local man with possession and distribution of child pornography after he uploaded images to Instagram.

Alexander Mejia, 35, of Ocean Township in Monmouth County, was charged with second degree distribution of child pornography and third degree possession of child pornography.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Computer Crimes Unit/Internet Crimes Against

Children Task Force said they received a referral from the New Jersey Internet Crimes Against Children (NJICAC) Task Force in June 2020. This referral came after Instagram reported him.

After investigation, the account was traced to Mejia’s address. A search warrant on the home on January 22, 2021 recovered evidence and eight electronic devices.

If convicted of the distribution charge, he faces a sentence of five to ten years in prison. If convicted of the possession charge, he faces three to five years in prison.

Charges are merely accusations until proven in a court of law.
