MANCHESTER – A 75-year old Whiting woman was struck by a passing vehicle in the area of Route 530 and Schoolhouse Road, police report.

At around 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, police responded to the area of Route 530 and Schoolhouse Road in Whiting for reports of a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Once on the scene, police observed a white 2012 Ford Fusion, stationary in the westbound shoulder of Route 530, and a woman sitting on the sidewalk at the intersection.

According to police, the 76-year old Patricia Keefe of Whiting was driving northbound on Schoolhouse Road, making a left hand turn onto Route 530 westbound when she struck Patricia Burke, also of Whiting. Burke was crossing Route 530 within the marked crosswalk when she was hit.

“Evidence at the scene, as well as driver, pedestrian, and witness statements, revealed that the Ford struck the pedestrian within the crosswalk at a slow rate of speed, knocking her to the ground in the roadway,” stated Manchester Lieutenant Vincent Manco.

Burke was assisted to the shoulder of the roadway by a passerby and waited there until EMS arrived on the scene. Burke was alert and conscious at the scene, complaining of pain to her right foot, according to police. She was transported to Community Medical Center by Quality Medical Transport.

Police continue to investigate the incident, but they believe the cause of the crash to be the driver’s failure to yield to a pedestrian within a crosswalk.
