MANCHESTER- An 89-year-old Whiting woman was seriously injured Friday evening in a two-vehicle crash at a busy Manchester Township intersection, authorities said.
Officers from the Manchester Township Police Department were dispatched at 5:33 p.m. on January 16 to the intersection of County Route 530 and School House Road for a report of a collision with serious injuries.
Police said a 2011 Nissan Altima traveling east on County Route 530 attempted a left turn and entered the path of a westbound 2007 Ford Mustang, resulting in a violent impact within the intersection. Both vehicles sustained extensive front-end damage, and airbags deployed in each.
The Nissan’s driver, identified as Gloria Smith, 89, of Whiting, was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. The Mustang was driven by Amanet Canto, 18, of Cream Ridge, who was not injured.
The roadway was partially closed for several hours while emergency crews assisted victims and investigators processed the scene. Multiple agencies responded, including local fire and emergency medical services, a medical helicopter, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing, but a failure to yield the right of way appears to have contributed to the crash. The incident is being investigated by Patrolmen Jesse Hoydis and Brendan Brush of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
